Meet Our Volunteer Board of Directors & Staff

Zach Holt, Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Zach Holt has been Crater Community Hospice’s Chief Executive Officer since August of 2020. Zach has worked in the hospice industry for many years and has strong leadership skills. His experience includes both operations as well as marketing and he is well known in the Central Virginia market. He has an extensive background in working with multidisciplinary teams to provide clinical excellence, which includes a commitment to serving our nation’s veterans. He is a resident of Chesterfield County.

CHAIR - David M. Merritt

Dave is a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel who began his career in 1972 as an Army Private and served for 27 years. After serving as Battalion Commander, he retired from the Army and subsequently managed large-scale IT projects for IBM, retiring in 2017. He served in a part time capacity starting in 2019 as an IT Project Manager at the Virginia Department of Transportation and returned to full retirement in 2023. Dave, and his wife Shelia, have two children and five grandchildren.

VICE CHAIR - Brenda Mitchell

A Registered Nurse with a certification in Hospice & Palliative Care retired after serving nearly 20 years as the CEO of Crater Community Hospice, now giving back in a volunteer role. A resident of Midlothian and very active in several local and state-wide civic and professional healthcare related organizations.

SECRETARY - Jeanne E. Holmes

Jeanne spent 39 years in Higher Education Financing, served two terms (8 years) as a gubernatorial State of Virginia appointee on the Virginia Board of Nursing as a citizen member, and currently serves as the Director of Corporate Services for Caracal Products and Services – a certified minority business enterprise.

TREASURER - Paul Glowinski

Paul is a Director of Finance at Capital One where he has served in multiple roles within Finance, Capital Management and Risk Management. He is a graduate of VCU and has a Masters in Business Administration from Raymond A. Mason Business School at William and Mary. Paul currently resides in Midlothian with his wife, two children, and two dogs.

Debbie Wall

Debbie is Director of Finance for Mundet Inc US based in Colonial Heights VA, which is a division of Delfort Group an Austrian company. Debbie has over 35 years in management, operations and accounting. Debbie is a graduate of Averett University with MBA, and holds two undergraduate degrees, B.S. Management from Virginia Tech and B.S. in Accounting from Bluefield University. Debbie and her husband Stan have a dog, Niko. Debbie and Stan are actively involved in Rotary and currently serve at the club and district level giving aback to the community and around the world, as well Debbie served as Rotary District Governor 2021-2022.

Rita G. Baldwin

Retired former Regional Director of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). Rita is a lifetime resident of Central Virginia now living in Chesterfield County.

Max Bornstein

Max is a Retired Director of Prince George Fire & EMS; he has an extensive background in emergency medical management, fire, Critical Incident Stress Management and Suicide Awareness. He has also served as an Emergency Medical Instructor. He is a resident of Prince George County.

Mike Coleman

Mike Coleman’s entire career has been in public service which included 34 years in the Virginia National Guard, then 11 years working for the Commonwealth of Virginia. His experience in the Virginia Guard began as a traditional guardsman, serving one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. In 1991, he transitioned to full-time employment with the Guard and retired in October 2007 as the Army Chief of Staff at the rank of Colonel. Mike then was asked to apply for a political appointment in the Governor’s cabinet as a Military Relations Liaison. He served in that capacity under 4 Governors, serving both Republican and Democrat administrations, to work with the military communities and installations to ensure Virginia was doing all it could to care for those serving our nation in uniform and their families. He retired in late 2020. Mike received his degree and military commission from VMI. He serves on the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation, the Virginia National Guard Foundation, and as the Finance Chair for Highland United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights. He and his wife, Linda, have lived in Colonial Heights going on 25 years.

Wendal Givens

Actively employed Manager and licensed funeral director – Petersburg Chapel of Johnson and Son Funeral Home. A native and lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, Wendal is very active in his church, and in local youth and gospel music ministries.

Jane Elliott Huffman

Retired Registered Nurse formerly serving on the board of the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing & former Associate Director of the Southside Regional Medical Center School of Nursing. Married, resident of South Chesterfield.

Robert W. Huffman

Retired Military; formerly in charge of military
funeral honors and
Survivor Outreach Services
for all branches of the Armed Services.
Married, resident of South Chesterfield.

Penny Nunnally

A former Crater Community Hospice Director of Clinical Services, now actively employed at Sentara Health Plans as a Population Health Care Nurse, working with Oncology and Palliative Care members. Penny is a long time resident of Dinwiddie County and married with two sons and two granddaughters.


Nancy Odum

Retired School Counselor with the Prince George County Public School System and a resident of Dinwiddie County.

Bud Yerly

Actively employed as Senior VP and Market Lending Executive with the Bank of Southside Virginia. Married with two children, Bud is a resident of Midlothian.

Leah Brantley

I am a native of the area, growing up in Petersburg and Colonial Heights.

After attending UNC-Greensboro and Virginia Commonwealth University where I studied marketing, I began my banking career in 1976 with The Bank of Virginia. I worked for other banking organizations in credit administration and management before joining The Bank of Southside Virginia in 1997. I was a VP Regional Manager when I retired in 2020.

Throughout my career, I was a member of several civic and professional organizations, holding board and leadership roles. The last 20 plus years have and continue to find me serving the region with the HBA of Southside Virginia, Sussex County Department of Social Services Advisory Board, and my church, Oakland Baptist.

My late husband and I settled in Sussex County in 1988 where I still reside. I have siblings, family, and friends in the area with which I enjoy spending my time. I hope to serve and give back to the community and those in it that supported me.
